RYOJI IKEDA
DATA-COSM [n°1]

Wednesday 15 October - Saturday 21 December

Experience the world premiere of Ryoji Ikeda's latest monumental installation - a total sensory encounter that transforms vast datasets into an immersive audiovisual environment, exploring the intersection of art and physics in unprecedented scale.

Commissioned by 180 Studios, Ryoji Ikeda's new site-specific audio-visual installation data-cosm [n°1] is a unique immersive experience charting the full spectrum of data on nature – from the microscopic scale of particle physics to the macroscopic of astrophysics, as was previously evident in the artist's data-verse project.

data-cosm [n°1] functions as a giant microscope, a scientific apparatus, a clinical device, a monitoring system, and a window to an infinitely vast space. Visitors are invited to lie down on the floor and look up at the large LED screen set on the ceiling above them, their bodies surrounded by Ikeda's soundscapes – a total sensory experience.

About Ryoji Ikeda

Japan's leading composer and visual artist Ryoji Ikeda focuses on the essential characteristics of sound itself and that of visuals as light by means of both mathematical precision and mathematical aesthetics. Born in 1965 in Gifu, Japan, Ikeda has gained a reputation as one of the few international artists working convincingly across both visual and sonic media. He elaborately orchestrates sound, visuals, materials, physical phenomena and mathematical notions into immersive live performances and installations.

180 Studios and The Vinyl Factory have been collaborating with Ikeda since 2015, when The Vinyl Factory staged the UK premiere of Ikeda's audio-visual installation supersymmetry at Brewer Street Car Park in Soho, London. 180 Studios subsequently exhibited Ikeda's iconic interactive work test pattern, drawing over 100,000 visitors to 180 The Strand in 2017.

Four years later, 180 Studios commissioned and produced Ikeda's largest-ever European exhibition, featuring over ten artworks, creating an unrivalled immersive experience across two floors of the building that drew both critical acclaim and record visitor numbers.
